Leopard 42 (AKA Moorings 4200) Catamaran

Following on the success of their Leopard 45 (known in the US as the Moorings 4500, winner of the 1999 Cruising World magazine's award for "Best Cruising Yacht"), South African boatbuilder Robertson and Caine has launched the new Leopard 42 / Moorings 4200. The first boats will be in The Moorings' Caribbean fleet this winter; private ownership sales are available now.

Robertson and Caine turned once again to the design firm of Simonis-Voogd, also of South Africa. This collaboration has won both firm accolades and awards from around the world, and has firmly established South Africa as one of the world's pre-eminent boat buiding nations, particularly with regards to cruising catamarans, where it controls a huge market share. Favorable exchange rates, a highly skilled workforce, and quality of construction have all played a role in the explosive growth of the boat building industry there.

This new 42' catamaran is designed for serious bluewater cruising.
The hulls are built of GRP construction with balsa core and solid glass along the hull centerline, for strength of structure as well as additional insulation. The innovative stepped hull design increases volume while minimizing the wetted hull surface, giving exceptional load carrying capacity and maximizing performance. High bridge deck clearance enables a smooth passage through waves for greater comfort. Fixed skegs protect the rudders, also offering excellent attachment points for the rudder shafts.

The twin Yanmar 40 HP engines can be accessed both from the interior and exterior, and skeg protected straight shaft transmission enables repair or replacement directly in the water. The upgraded instrumentation panel is conveniently positioned at the navigation station. Autonomy is a key word, with fuel tanks holding 95 Gal. and a water tank capacity of 211 Gal. Redundant systems, 3 Gel Cell service batteries, 2 Gel Cell engine batteries and 2 upgraded 90 Amp alternators are all part of the standard electrical equipment.

Deck fittings have been carefully studied; the 1000W Lofran electric windlass is positioned to hoist the mainsail if desired. "Louvre" steps fitted over the sloping saloon windows facilitate access to the roof and boom while keeping the saloon shaded. Large Lewmar Ocean Line hatches for each cabin as well as 16 opening portholes provide excellent ventilation throughout. The navigation instruments are all located at the steering console and oversized Lewmar winches for main and jib sheet handling are within easy reach of the double helmsman's seat.

The sail area has been maximized ensuring increased performance even when fully loaded. The deck layout is clear, with the genoa tracks placed on the saloon roof, while the mainsheet traveler is positioned overhead on the trademark "targa" wing arch at the aft end of the cockpit. This arrangement makes the cockpit area very safe and allows direct walk-through access to the wide aft bathing platform that connects both transoms — great for swimming, diving or boarding a dinghy.

The air conditioned interior features two layouts: either three or four spacious double cabins each with en-suite shower and head, with the layout of the forward cabins enabling you access the double berth from either side for greater comfort and also leading through to the single berths located in the forepeaks. The spacious and modern galley-up design enables guests to be served directly in the saloon or cockpit and features soft curves and Corian work surfaces. Plentiful storage and separate chest refrigeration means catering for a large party is no problem and the saloon table converts to a double berth should any unexpected guests drop by.
