A jet-powered Yamaha sport boat qualifies for wakesurfing tow-boat duty simply because, unlike sterndrive- and outboard-powered boats, it does not have a propeller spinning dangerously close to the surfer. So check that box. What’s missing is the sort of surf wake-enhancement provided by the surf-specific trim tabs featured on many wakesurf boats with inboard or Volvo Penta Forward Drive power. Now Yamaha offers an answer with its new Yamaha WakeBooster® Wake Enhancer, the key component of its accessory Wakesurf Package that also includes a wakesurf board and a wakesurf tow line.
The Wakesurf Package is priced at $999 and designed for all 2017 and newer 21-foot Yamaha boats and 2015 and newer 24-foot Yamaha boats, but will be an especially good fit for the Yamaha Wake Series models, the 212X and 242X, which are equipped with SurfPointe™ jet nozzle orientation, Drive Control speed control system, and an automated ballast system. In our past experience with these boats, one issue remained – the frothy turbulence created by the thrust of the jet pumps that kept the wake near the stern of the boat from being as solid as we’d like. The new WakeBooster is designed to address this issue by “scooping” water 90 degrees from the side of the boat towards the centerline, feeding the wake with a massive amount of clean water. The result is a wake that is more easily surfable, with a nice curl and deeper pocket that provides a larger wakesurfing area. The WakeBooster is made from heavy aluminum plate and attaches without tools using a pin and screw knob to the port or starboard stainless steel tie-down eye below the transom. You really need to get into the water to install the WakeBooster, and Yamaha fits it with a small fender that acts as a float so it won’t sink to the bottom of the lake if you drop it or it happens to come off the boat. It’s also designed for use only at wakesurfing speeds, and should be removed for running at cruising speed.
I’ve tried surfing behind Yamaha boats, with and without the WakeBooster, and for me the WakeBooster made a big difference. In fact, I never really surfed successfully behind a Yamaha boat without the WakeBooster because I’m a novice and the sweet spot of the wake is pretty small. With the WakeBooster in place the wake is a little higher, but it’s much more solid and there’s more surfable wake to work with – and I was able to surf! For families interested in casual surfing who already own a Yamaha boat, this package will be a great investment. Successful surfing also probably requires water ballast in boat models not equipped with the built-in system, which the owner will need to add with aftermarket bladders like Fly High Fat Sacs.
In addition to WakeBooster, the Yamaha Wakesurf Package comes with an exclusive 5-foot, 3-inch long, co-branded Slingshot wakesurf board developed for Yamaha Boats, and a wakesurf tow rope. The board size and shape provide an easy ride for the entire family.
